Karwa Chauth has its major significance among married woman. It is believed
that the fast of Karwa Chauth bless prosperity and longevity to the husbands. But
remember that fast of Karwa Chauth has hard and fast rules and all devotees
should have to obey all rules. There are many legends related to Karwa Chauth.
The Legend from Mahabharat:
The
importance and power of this fast also mention in the Hindu epic Mahabharat. According
to the Mahabharat, Draupadi took the fast of Karwa Chauth to overcome from the
problems. Once Arjun went for penance on the Nilgiri Mountain, at that time
Pandavas faced various problems. During this tough period Draupadi remembered
Lord Krishna for help. To hear the problem of Draupadi Lord Krishna gives her
advice to perform Karwa Chauth fast. On the advice of Lord Krishna she followed
all the instructions of the Karwa Chauth
fast and finally get rid of the problems.
The Legend of Karva:
In
the ancient time, a woman was extremely faithful to her husband. One day her
husband went to the forest to take a bath in the river. During bathing a
crocodile caught him when Karwa saw that she ran and leap that crocodile with a
cotton thread. After this incident, she went to the Yampuri to meet with Yamraj
God of death. She requested to the Yamraj to send that crocodile in the hell.
When Yamraj refused her offer, Karwa threatened him that if he ignore her she
will give him a curse. Yamraj know that she is a loyal and devoted wife so he
accept to send crocodile in hell as well as bless his husband long and fruitful
life.
The Story of Queen Veeravati:
A long
time before, a beautiful girl named Veeravati was lived with her seven
brothers. When she became younger her brothers married her with a king. On her
first Karwa Chauth she came to her parents house and celebrate her fast with
her sister’s-in –Law. She observed all the strict rules of the fast of Karwa
Chauth but while sunrise she feels hungry and waiting eagerly for the moon. When
her brothers saw that their loving sister is hungry they offer her food but she
rejected and said that first she saw the moon after that she take a meal. To
hear this, all brothers feeling disturbs and make a plan to break the fast of
their sister. They fire the Pipal tree leaves and asked to her sister that moon
was rising, she narrates her Sisters-in –Law the same thing but they warn her
that this is a conspiracy of his brothers. But she believed blindly on her
brothers so she opened the fast but after this she receives a news about her
husband’s illness.
Veeravati
returned to her husband’s palace, fortunately she met with Lord Shiva and his
wife Parvati on the way. Goddess Parvati informed her that her husband had died
because of her mistake. Then she requested to the Goddess Parvati to forgive
her mistake and returned her husband’s life. To hear her grievance Goddess
Parvati bless her husband’s life but gave her warning to perform strictly all
the rules of the fast.
